My Funeral Poem

Generous at Heart

The man who chose to join our lives became the best we’d ever known,

A hardworking, loyal, generous soul, humble right down to the bone.

Your stories shaped the way I think, the way I see the world today,

And every tale you ever told still guides me gently on my way.

You kept the energy in our days, even when times were hard to bare.

Our knight, our strength, our saving grace, you were simply always there.

Our walking, talking encyclopaedia, the one with answers calm and wise,

The planner of our greatest trips, the man who opened up our skies.

And that last trip, just you and me, a stepson and his bonus dad,

To Blackpool for the fighter jets, one of the best days we ever had.

I see your smile still roaming free, scooting proudly down the pier,

Even breaking down three times could never spoil the joy we held that year.

Your presence filled the quiet rooms and warmed the corners of our days,

A steady calm that settled hearts, a comfort in a thousand ways.

You made the ordinary bright, your laughter turned the small to grand,

Just being there was everything, a gentle touch, a guiding hand.

The grandchildren loved you without end; you gave them time and play,

You listened, laughed, and joined their games, you brightened every day.

Their faces lit when you were near; your patience knew no bound,

You built a world of simple joys where love and laughter found.

I’ll miss so much about you now the gentleman you chose to be,

Your warmth, your humour, generosity, the way you loved our family.

Your presence shaped our every day, and losing you will leave a space,

For men like you are rare to find with a heart like yours, a steady grace.

To say “thank you” feels too small for all the ways you changed my view;

You shaped the man I’ve grown to be; a part of me is built from you.

For a stepdad to leave such a mark is precious, deep, and true;

Everything I am today is touched by all I learned from you.

David - Generous at heart,

A man whose love will never part.
